SecureTrek: What to Backup? The first time you use SecureTrek to backup your computer you need to plan which directories and files you should backup. You want to choose files that are critical to you and may change over time. Files such as pictures and music are best archived locally on writable CDs. Critical files include database and related files used by programs such as physician office management. Or, they may be word processing documents and related indexes such as used in legal practices. Also, many users create a variety of different types of files that they feel are critical. It is up to you to determine what is critical and what is not. SecureTrek maintains a 10-day rolling backup of your files. This means that you can restore versions of files up to 10-days prior.

Tape Backup Analogy: SecureTrek is like a daily tape backup. It secures against loss of data due to hardware failure and disasters. It captures additions and changes to databases, newly created files, and modifications of existing files. However, unlike unreliable tapes that may be balky and take a long time if you want to restore specific files, SecureTrek is reliable and allows the quick and easy restoration of individual files. Further, a SecureTrek is already offsite. Tapes need to be taken offsite. SecureTrek: Your First BackupOnce you decided which to backup, you are ready for your first backup. Start up the SecureTrek client and click on the check boxes (see client image above) of the directories and files to be backed up. A couple of tricks:
|
under My Documents? First, check My Documents. This will check all the sub-directories. Then uncheck the sub-directories you do not want backed up such as My Pictures.Another way of selectively choosing sub-directories and files is to use the Filtering feature. Click on Filters on the client’s tool-bar and follow the intuitive steps. One more step is to set-up the schedule. Click on Schedules and the “Backup Set Schedules” tab. Click on “Add” and a wizard will walk you through the steps. Now to backup, click on the “Backup Now” button. Your first backup will take quite a while, but all subsequent backups will be down-right speedy!
